THE Tasmanian Government has pledged $12 million to help save the state's endangered icon, the Tasmanian Devil.

The money will be spent on programs to help combat Devil Facial Tumour Disease, which has ravaged the Tasmanian Devil population.

Primary Industries Minister David Llewellyn said the funding would provide the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program with a base to continue its conservation work.

"This initiative enables the continuation of core projects, including increasing the existing insurance population, disease suppression and population studies, diagnostic and research work and community awareness,'' he said.

"Today's budget funding will enable us to continue our efforts to mitigate the impact of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease on one of Tasmania's iconic animals.''

The funding comes on top of a $10 million, five-year Federal Government commitment.

Tasmanian devil gets endangered 'upgrade'

TASMANIAN devils have joined the endangered species list as their population continues its rapid decline.

The Mercury reports the devil was today upgraded from 'vulnerable' to 'endangered' under national environment laws.

The insidious infectious cancer that threatens the iconic species has cut the population by up to 70 per cent.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett yesterday said the devil would get greater protection.

"The up-listing meant the species was under continued threat and the population was continuing to decline," Mr Garrett said.
